Deacons Serving The Church:

Thank you for your interest and service to the church’s mission and vision. Our mission is to be and make disciples. Our vision is to live in love and service to Christ, our homes, our church, and the world. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with the information you will need to serve  as a deacon in the church. We are more focused on the function of the deacon than the title. This document establishes the expectations and describes the relationship between the pastors, the deacons, and the people they serve.

We ask each deacon to make a one year service commitment. At the beginning of the year we will cast vision and recommit our leadership team for the coming year. We have set aside the first Wednesday of the month for the pastors to care for our leaders. That night will focus on caring for, and strengthening you in the work of the ministry.

The local church in the NT was led and served by elders and deacons (Phil 1:1). The role of deacon (serving leader) is a leadership role and exists to assist the pastors in accomplishing the mission and vision of the church. The role of deacon is derived from the Greek word diakonos. The english translation of this word is “servant”, and the role is best described as a serving leader, someone who leads others to Christ by serving them in His love. We expect every leader to lovingly serve others in humility.

The two paragraphs below outline the biblical qualifications and the church’s expectations of the deacon. Because the mission and vision of our church depends on our leadership working together, it is important to be clear on expectations. This establishes unity on what we do, and clarity on what we don’t do.

Biblical Qualifications:

1 Timothy 3:8–13  — 8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their women (wives) must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Acts 6:2–4 - Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

Romans 16:1–2 - I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant (deacon) of the church in Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.

Church Expectations OF THE DEACON:

  1. Commitment to a lifestyle consistent with our mission and vision of living in love and service to Christ, home, church, world.

  2. Commitment to model the mission and vision of the church

  3. Commitment to enter into the challenges, suffering, and victories of others.

  4. Commitment to financially support the church in a cheerful and generous manner with our first fruits (tithe) and offerings.

  5. Commitment to advancing through our spiritual formation, discipleship track, and monthly midweek leadership nights held on the first wednesdays of the month.

  6. Commitment to honor the time of others, being prompt and responsive with church leaders and those in their care.
